The Really Gross Reasons You Should Use Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tablets

If the plumbing isn't quite right, sewer gas can bubble up through your toilet and into your home. This air should be considered highly contaminated. If your toilet is bubbling or gurgling, contact a plumber right away. During the SARS epidemic, poorly-designed apartment plumbing systems were implicated in spreading the virus throughout apartment complexes in Hong Kong.

You also probably share your bathroom with other people in your household. Your other household members are potentially spreading viruses (and other things) all over the house every time they flush the toilet. So in addition to closing the lid before you flush, adding toilet bowl cleaner tablets will reduce the viral or bacterial load in each flush.
